Custom Designed Labels Complete Your Quest for Organization

Everyone has stuff. From paper stuff to plastic stuff, TV stuff to computer stuff, phone stuff to book stuff, and on and on. And, of course, most of the stuff has labels. Labels in the clothes to tell you where they were made and how best to wash it, labels on cans to tell us the calorie and sodium counts, labels on the back of things, labels on the front of things - how did we ever make it without labels? Don't forget about the thousands of articles out there that tell you how to organize your stuff leaving you space for more stuff!

So why should you read this article over the others? The answer is simple, organize all you want - but without a plan of how you are actually going to find all this great stuff you are putting away in boxes and bins, you are wasting your time. Remember before when I told you how useful labels were on our clothes and food? They can be just as useful in our journey towards organization utopia. Thing of all the time you will save going through all those totes you just filled up with last winters clothes if they are labeled by person, color, or heaviness.

Color coding is a great way to simplify things. For instance, if you’re moving, having color coded labels on the boxes means you can find which box goes to which bedroom with a glance. You don't even have to take the time to write names on the boxes. Quickly slap on a label with the predetermined labels -green for the kitchen, pink for the girls’ room and the box is ready to be put on the truck or in storage.

Now, about those boxes in storage. Lots of boxes wind up in storage or the garage for later retrieval. But when it comes time to retrieve them, unless we have taken the time to label them, finding what we’re looking for could be a nightmare. While you may remember the rectangle box has your favorite flower vase and the square one is old car parts, a couple months down the road you are going to be opening every box out there to find that vase. This is a perfect example of when color coding can help. Use brightly colored labels so you can quickly pick out your writing. Magazines are a great example. If you collect Martha Stewart magazines and want to find your favorite blueberry muffin recipe, clearly writing the title and year(s) on the side will make your hunt much quicker. You should use colored labels for boxes of other books too. By alphabetizing them and putting a list of those books in the top of the box you can save an enormous amount of time when it comes to finding that copy of "Good Night Moon” that your 3 year old has to have read every night.

Next, using appropriately shaped or designed labels simplifies matters too. For instance, having the proper labels for CD’s and DVD’s means all those home-made disks full of music, TV shows, and movies will keep the confusion level down. Since you can use custom labels, you don’t have to try to decipher handwriting in order to keep up with last seasons’ episodes of Lost.

When it comes to those DIY projects and other home improvements, there always ends up being a stash of little pieces and parts floating around in the junk drawer in the kitchen. On occasion, those may make their way down to the basement or into the garage where they will be added to the other accumulated pieces and parts left over from all the other projects. The next time it comes time to replace a screw in a chair or to find that exact same paneling nail from the den, unless we take the time to put those pieces and parts in a labeled bag, you could spend more time looking for the right screw than you do completing the project.

Labels are designed to help us save time. And the best part is that they are designed to also help us cut down on the hassle factor. So for those reasons and the 5 great tips above, taking a little time to make a few labels will cut down on your antacid intake and allow you time to enjoy life a little more. Instead of always losing your stuff, you can actually enjoy them. And that’s the point!
