How to Get More Organized – Save Time And Money

If your new Year's Resolution was to get organized, you are not alone. For most everyone, the accessories of living have a way of spilling over into other parts of our lives very quickly -- making things seem out of control. Looking at certain areas of our home or office may leave us feeling frustrated. In the long run getting organized might save us time and money and relieve stress.

Let it Go

The business of getting organized can seem a daunting task. The number 1 reason people don't get organized is being overwhelmed at the amount of items to file, things to sift through, and inability to let go. We hold onto stuff because it might be important down the road. The first step in getting organized is to let it go.

  • Every day spend a few minutes on certain areas. Decide to let go of everything that is no longer needed. Have you used it in the last year? Many items can be donated or recycled.
  • As you decide what to keep, ask yourself if it is truly worth keeping or if the space you will save is more valuable.

Have a Place for What You Keep

Another helpful tool in getting organized is having a designated place for everything. Containers for things that can become disorganized goes a long way in getting and staying organized.

  • Keep your space, desk, or home office running efficiently with desk accessories. For larger tools and projects, bins and baskets work well while smaller desk organizers strategically placed are great for frequently used items.
  • Use certain color file folders for different items. This makes things easier to locate.
  • Label your files and other containers using address labels.
  • Review and clean up your email box daily, if possible.
  • Get a personal organizer to keep track of appointments.
  • Tackle today's issues today.

Sanity Savers - The Little Things

Little things can take up more time and effort than we realize. The mad dash to leave the house most week days can leave you looking for your keys, helping the kid's find their shoes and coats, and grabbing last minute items before departure. Being unorganized eats away at your valuable time and significantly raises your stress level. There are many organizers created specifically to help us get organized.

  • Sort mail everyday, throwing away or shredding anything that does not need to be kept.
  • File bills according to due date as soon as they arrive.
  • Immediately file other important papers you need to keep.
  • Use tax organizers to save important papers and receipts.
  • Place a Family Calendar visible to everyone for important reminders.

Save time, money, and your sanity. Reap the benefits of getting organized. Imagine the time you will save searching for things. Fewer appointments will be missed, and bills will be paid on time. When things are easily accessible in their designated place, there is less stress in day-to-day living. In the end, you might have time for that a cup of coffee or tea and that book you have been meaning to read.
